What is the Metaverse?

While the term “metaverse” may sound like a cliche, it actually has many layers, all centered around human interaction with digital worlds. The first layer, known as the creator economy, focuses on the fertile ground of developers. The second layer, called the spatial computing layer, describes new forms of computation and 3D manipulation. The third layer is the human interface layer, which refers to various forms of user interaction in the digital environment. The term “metaverse” was coined in the science fiction novel “Snow Crash,” written by Neal Stephenson, who envisioned lifelike avatars within a virtual reality environment. Since then, various developments have been made in technology and gaming that are leading to the actual metaverse. These innovations include the creation of 3D holographic avatars and the widespread use of video and augmented reality. Ultimately, the metaverse is expected to be an environment where billions of people can experience a hyper-real, alternate reality.

The metaverse has many potential uses for consumers and businesses. The technology makes it possible for people to access virtual spaces and online content as an actual person.
